What Is Chai Tea?

What Is Chai Tea?

Chai Teas are extremely popular and have been enjoyed in South Asia for a long time. Whilst the word 'chai' is a name given to tea in Hindi, Western culture recognises the word 'chai' to be tea blended with spices. Many Chai Tea recipes have been passed from generation to generation so there is no fixed recipe, or preparation method, but most involve using a good strong base tea, spices such as cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, pepper and cloves with milk and sweetener.

Masala Chai

Masala Chai traditionally refers to a strong black tea base mixed with spices. Traditionally these spices are ginger, coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, black pepper and traditional Masala Chai is made by simmering the mixture of milk and water along with the loose leaf tea, spices and sugar but exact recipes and methods vary according to taste or local customs. As the popularity of Chai has grown so have the many variations of using tea and spices to prepare Chai teas.

In our collection of Chai Teas, we have a traditional Masala Chai, Kuchipudi Masala Chai Tea a blend using a good strong black tea base and traditional spices along with a more exotic Chai Tea in Jasmine Chai which adds floral notes of Jasmine, Rose, Lavender and warming nutmeg spice to the traditional chai tea blend.
