Juniper Berries have been used for hundreds of years and make a fantastic blending ingredient when creating tea blends, or they can be enjoyed as a herbal tea with their distinctive spicy and slightly citrus flavour.

What are Juniper Berries?

Juniper berries are not true berries; rather, they are the female seed cones of various species of juniper evergreen shrubs or trees in the genus Juniperus. The texture of the berries, whether fresh or dried, is more hard than soft, providing a crunchy texture when eaten directly. While there are a number of different juniper species, the most commonly used in cooking, tea blending, and gin production is Juniperus communis. The berries are generally round in shape and have a bluish-violet to dark brown colour.

Growing Regions

While Juniper plants grow across many parts of the Northern Hemisphere, they are highly adaptable to different climates and temperatures. Our Juniper berries are grown in Albania, whose warm climate and limetsone-rich soil is ideal.

Peak Harvest

Towards the end of summer, in early August, the berries reach their peak ripeness and are plucked before going through a natural drying process. The berries are spread out in the natural sunlight and turned regularly so they are dried evenly. This natural method of drying helps to preserve flavour.

What are the health benefits of Juniper Berries?

  • Antioxidant Properties: The berries contain high levels of antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress in the body, protecting the body from cellular damage and supporting general health.
  • Digestive Health: Known to stimulate the production of digestive enzymes to aid digestion. In addition, they possess antispasmodic properties that help relieve bloating and excess gas, and encourage the growth of good bacteria in the gut.
  • Anti-Inflammatory Effects: Juniper Berries contain the compounds alpha-pinene and sabinene, which are effective in reducing inflammation in conditions like arthritis and muscle pain.
  • Immune Boosting: The berries are rich in Vitamin C and have antimicrobial properties that support the immune system.
  • Skin Care: The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of the berries help with a variety of skin conditions, such as acne. In addition, they are noted for their potential to promote skin elasticity and anti-ageing.

Caution in pregnancy and kidney disease: Juniper Berries may not be suitable for pregnant women or those with kidney problems. Always consult with your medical practitioner for guidance.

Hot water infusion for Juniper Berry Tea

When boiling water is poured over the berries, the heat from the water releases oils and flavours and produces a rich, piney aroma. As they have a hard texture, the brewing time needs to be longer than for most herbal teas.
